I haven’t spoken or written excessively about the sordid confirmation saga of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.  Besides a column applauding Mitch McConnell for locating his spine and demanding an end to what has become a political theater of the absurd, and a piece expressing shocked appreciation for Lindsey Graham’s righteous indignation at the exploitation of both Judge Kavanaugh and his accuser Dr. Christie Blasey Ford, I’ve kept my opinions about the entire spectacle primarily to myself and off social media.

If you had asked me to pick what Republican Senator was going to lay into the Democrats with righteous indignation today for them callously using Brett Kavanaugh’s character, reputation, and his innocent family as collateral damage in their political games, I would have put a lot of money on Ted Cruz.  If not him, maybe Ben Sasse or Mike Lee.

But never in a million years would I have thought South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham would have a Spartacus moment that made Cory Booker’s attempt look as weak and mock-able as, well, it was.  But that’s exactly what happened...

No one who has any idea what has become of the Ivy League was surprised to hear that Yale Students were leaving class, sitting in, running for safe spaces, and bussing to Washington, D.C. to protest Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation vote in the Senate. 

Never mind the grotesque irony of law students eschewing somewhat significant legal concepts like the presumption of innocence, evidence, corroboration of witness testimony...

Let’s start by re-stating how David French succinctly summarized the haze of bizarre sexual allegations made against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh:

“There is not a single third-party witness to any claim that can corroborate any accuser or even conclusively place Kavanaugh at the location of any alleged crime.”

That factual statement does not cheapen the seriousness of sexual assault.  It doesn’t even impugn the motives or sensibilities of the accuser(s).  It simply means that...

The rallying cry of conservatives eschewing character concerns for a pragmatic calculation to support candidate Donald Trump in 2016, was often condensed to two words: “He Fights!”

It was mind-numbing to a great number of us who constantly found ourselves asking what good fighting for the sake of fighting is.  Fighting for conservatism is what we wanted, but Trump seemed willing to fight anyone, over anything, about anything.  That’s why I always found the word “petulance” to be a better descriptor for his Twitter tirades and childish jabs...

In a way, former independent “conservative” candidate for president Evan McMullin deserves credit for pulling off one of the sickest scams in recent American political history.  McMullin exploited the desperation of a significant portion of conservatives who were unable to support a man with the character issues of Donald Trump for the presidency.  Little did they all know that by supporting McMullin in his stead, they were casting a vote with someone unscrupulous enough to pose as a conservative simply to advance his own personal brand.

After I had one of the most mind-numbing, incomprehensible exchanges with the president of Union Theological Seminary a few years ago, a listener to my radio program sent me a note.  In it, he included the words of the great theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer who, after studying briefly at Union, wrote in his biography of the feckless seminary,

“There is no theology here... They talk a blue streak without the slightest substantive foundation... The students are completely clueless with respect to what dogmatics is really about. They are unfamiliar with even the most basic of questions. They become intoxicated with liberal and humanistic phrases, laugh at the fundamentalists, and yet basically are not even up to their level.”

Popular and inspiring Christian hip hop artist and poet Jackie Hill Perry recently courted controversy with a tweet that was both heralded and hated.  Amidst the ongoing debate over the relationship between social justice causes and the Gospel of Jesus, Perry proclaimed:

“White people are not the curators of sound theology.”

The remark garnered a couple thousand likes but struck some as unnecessarily provocative and unhelpful to Kingdom building for Christ...

There’s an iconic moment from the old Saturday Night Live when Dana Carvey imitated George H.W. Bush in a debate with Michael Dukakis.  After Carvey gets done going on a tangent about “stay the course, thousand points of light, stay the course,” Jon Lovitz, playing Dukakis, looks into the screen and just mumbles incredulously, “I can’t believe I’m losing to this guy.”

It hasn’t been long since NBC’s Chuck Todd called for the mainstream press to fight back against President Donald Trump’s assault on the “free press” – a call that generated a lot of eyerolls across the fruited plain.  The eyerolls weren’t due to a lack of appreciation for the vital role a free press has in a democratic republic.  No, the dismissive attitude taken by most Americans to Todd’s theatrical battle cry is the result of realizing that Chuck and his colleagues have no one to blame for their plight but themselves.

I recently read a thought-provoking, though ultimately misguided, article by Daniel Jose Camacho from the faith-oriented left-wing commentary website Sojourners.  In it, Camacho argued against the preoccupation many American Christians have with capitalism, suggesting that,

“Capitalism is so deeply ingrained in our Christianity that it is the default.  Yet, this arrangement is neither natural nor inevitable.”

There’s a situation going down in my home state of Indiana that provides a good learning opportunity for people of sound mind around the country.  For years, left-leaning social activists have been attempting to push “hate crimes” legislation through Indiana’s part-time legislature and onto the Governor’s desk.  To this point it hasn’t happened, largely because for well over a decade we haven’t had a Governor who would have been silly enough to sign it.

I get that the “Bill Clinton checks out Ariana Grande” moment at the Aretha Franklin funeral was what attracted the most attention from right-leaning Twitter accounts.  And make no mistake, the look on his face and the entire scene was creepy.  See for yourself.

I was just out of college and really into politics when former Democrat Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone died in a plane crash.  The Senate was tenuously balanced at the time, and with just weeks left before the midterms, the loss came at a time of heightened political tension.  None of that, however, excused what would happen at Wellstone’s memorial service.
