There’s a lot of hand-wringing going on in front of television cameras about the plight of illegal immigrant families at the country’s border with Mexico.  Families are being separated, children are being held in detention cages, and there’s a paralyzing political debate about concentration camps, Trump’s culpability, and the seriousness of the crisis.

And the rhetoric has ventured into Crazy Town.  For instance, Kamala Harris shocked most sensible people the other night during her presidential debate by appearing to morally justify a mother paying a human trafficker to bring her child to America:

A mother who pays a coyote to transport her child through their country of origin, through the entire country of Mexico, facing unknown peril, to come here -- why would that mother do that? I will tell you. Because she has decided for that child to remain where they are is worse. But what does Donald Trump do? He says, "Go back to where you came from." That is not reflective of our America and our values, and it's got to end.

I will admit it seems very peculiar to me that anyone would think this dire situation will be improved by creating a legal environment through policy that would make this gamble actually pay off for the mother.  It’s not hard to conclude that if one mother finds success getting her child to America in this manner, other mothers will be trying the same thing.

And for Democrats who think that’s not true, I wish they would just listen to their president.  And before you say, “He’s #NotMyPresident,” I’m not talking about that one.  I’m talking about this one:

That’s President Obama stating the obvious in an ABC interview in 2014.  Just four years later his own party now regards this as stuff racist Nazis say.  They’re wrong, of course, and Obama is right. What he’s saying is common sense.

And this is why I will never be invited to be a presidential debate moderator.  Because this quote is just begging to be read as “the president’s” comments, and then solicit the candidates’ response before eventually revealing it was the previous president who said it, not the current one.

The fireworks would be spectacular.
