Trump’s personal problems are myriad.  He is as polarizing a figure as Democrats could have ever hoped to have in office if they were forced to run against an incumbent president.  He’s petulant, thin-skinned, and unfocused to boot.  Elected Republicans are largely uncomfortable associating too much with him, even while they try to walk the tight rope of defending his “policies.”  Many staunch conservatives who hold moral character as a non-negotiable in determining their vote, refuse to support him.

He’s the dream opponent for the Democrats.  They managed to lose to him in 2016 by doing the unthinkable: nominate the only person in the country who was more polarizing, less likable, and more untrustworthy than him.  But in 2020?  In 2020 all they have to do is just not be crazy.

And. They. Just. Can’t. Do. It.

If Trump has any hope, it’s to have his potential opponents going on record suggesting that defending the right of pre-born babies to not be tortured to death in the womb is “not acceptable” in America; maybe even go so far as to compare the defense of preborn life with being a racist.  You know, nutty stuff.  Nutty stuff like Democrat presidential candidate Kristen Gillibrand actually just said:

“I think there’s [sic] some issues that have such moral clarity that we have as a society decided that the other side is not acceptable,” she said.

“Imagine saying that it’s okay to appoint a judge who’s racist or anti-Semitic or homophobic. Asking someone to appoint someone who takes away basic human rights of any group of people in America — I don’t think that those are political issues any more,” Ms. Gillibrand said.

If Trump has any hope, it’s to have elected Democrat Congressmen voicing deranged and offensive rubbish from the floor of the House of Representatives.  Rubbish like Democrat representative Norma Torres just said:

Speaking on the House floor, the California Democrat said, “Mr. Speaker, it is tiring to hear from so many sex-starved males on this floor talk about a woman’s right to choose.”

Torres was immediately called on her remark and withdrew it, restating her complaint.  What should be the easiest case in the world for Democrats to make – “we are more civil and dignified than Trump” – is totally undermined by this type of thing.

If Trump had any hope, it’s to have his constant harping on the bias of the “Fake News media” be justified by mainstream news outlets demonstrating flagrant favoritism and distortion.  Distortion like The Hill just unleashed, as documented by the Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto:

I’m convinced Trump’s only hope in 2020 is the same as it was in 2016: that his opponents manage to implode, making a procession of missteps and unforced errors that make Trump the safer, more reasonable, more honest option.  Somehow, someway, the Democrats appear committed to doing that.  Unbelievable.
