So since I’m already on record as thinking (knowing) that the Nancy Pelosi-led Democrats just humiliated President Trump over this shutdown/border wall issue, I do think it’s worthwhile acknowledging that a political victory doesn’t bring legitimacy or nobility to the effort.

Every American will judge for themselves the President’s motive in sustaining the shutdown that deprived people of their livelihoods before eventually relenting and giving up.  So too should every American judge the Democrats’ motive for sustaining the shutdown that deprived people of their livelihoods before eventually winning the day.

Personally, I think it became crystal clear what the Democrat motive was in a speech delivered in her characteristically clumsy way by the stammering leader of the Democrat pack, Ms. Pelosi:

“We do not support the president holding the health, safety, and paychecks of the American people hostage again to a campaign applause line.  There is serious and justified concern that this president would shut down the government anytime he does not get his way legislatively.  That is why we must hold the line on this shutdown in government.”

Wait, what?  Notice that Pelosi pulls the curtain back to reveal the motivation she has for “holding the line.”  It’s not a policy concern – it’s about political leverage.  Pelosi admits here that Democrats were willing to “hold the health, safety, and paychecks of the American people hostage” (her words) because it’s a power play for her.

Is that somehow noble or reasonable?  Is it not petty and the height of rank, partisan bile?  Is it not the very conduct citizens have grown so weary of seeing from the Washington swamp?

President Trump may well be wrong about the border wall being necessary to protect Americans.  He may well be wrong that it’s a matter of the highest national security.  But that means that worst case scenario, his part in this colossal clown-show of a government shutdown was driven by policy.

Pelosi has acknowledged she and her caucus didn’t even care about the policy of a border wall.  They cared about politically strong-arming the President for the sake of accruing power.

It’s a fair question the American people could and should ask themselves: would you rather have a leader willing to inflict pain on you because he is aggressively committed to a policy he thinks is best for the country, or leaders willing to inflict pain on you because they are aggressively committed to sticking it to their political opposition?

Pelosi and her compatriots should hope the American people don’t think all this through and their media allies run cover.
