The wave of pro-life legislation continues to roll across the American southeast, as Louisiana became the latest in a series of states to protect all humans with beating hearts from being tortured to death with medical instruments.  But there was something that set Louisiana apart from Georgia, Mississippi, and Alabama. 

Louisiana’s heartbeat abortion ban was introduced by a Democrat, supported by many others, and signed into law by a Democrat Governor. 

How can that happen?  It happens thanks to the Founding Fathers’ ingenious system of federalism.  State lawmakers are not nearly as beholden to the big money bundlers, the activist PACs, the national media narrative as national ones.  Representation is more representative, responsive, and receptive.  The state’s culture can inform its policies without being drown out by the authoritarian control of the national party structure.

But what shouldn’t be overlooked is that the four states that have enacted these laws recently are among the states who boast the highest percentage of African Americans per capita in the country: Mississippi is 2^nd, Louisiana is 3^rd, Georgia is 4^th, Alabama is 7^th. 

Don’t think that’s a coincidence.  More black citizens recognize abortion for what it is than the national news media will let on.  Just ask Democrat state representative Katrina Jackson of Louisiana.  She voted for the bipartisan heartbeat bill and pulled no punches in explaining why: 

"I think it mitigates our race's voting power, it hurts our race's power in the census. I really consider it to be modern-day genocide," Jackson, an African American Democrat, told NBC News on Monday.

While abortions hurt every race and culture, Jackson is correct that it hurts African Americans more than any other racial group. Black Americans have a disproportionately high number of abortions compared to other racial groups. According to census data, African Americans make up about 13 percent of the U.S. population but have about 30 percent of the abortions.

African-American teenage abortion rates are more than twice as high as the national average. The African American abortion rate is 41 per 1,000 women ages 15 to 19, according to a study conducted by the Guttmacher Institute. The national average abortion rate is 18 per 1,000 women ages 15 to 19.

For similar reasons, Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Martin Luther King Jr., recently praised new pro-life laws in the southern states for granting “civil rights” to babies in the womb.

As much as LGBT activists have desperately sought to make their agenda the modern day civil rights crusade, the plight of the unborn is obviously the great human rights challenge of our day.  Lawmakers like Jackson and activists like King recognize the haunting similarities between arguments for slavery and arguments for abortion; they are aware of the eugenic and racist foundations of the abortion movement, and they are bravely blowing the whistle.  It remains for those of us whose conscience pushes us towards equal rights and true social justice for all human beings to follow their lead.
